TAHOE STEREO UPGRADE

I installed the Eonon GMA12S in my 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe after previously using an Eonon Q80 Pro. Here is what the swap involved, the features I covered, and what to check before ordering a stereo for your own truck.

Disclosure: Eonon provided the GMA12S for this review. This page also contains affiliate links; I may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you.

Model note: The installation and photos below cover the GMA12S. The Amazon shopping link on this page is for a GMX6S-PRO, a different model. This review is not a hands-on test of that model; verify its current specifications and vehicle fitment separately.

My quick take

I liked the responsive connection, Android app access, and flexibility of the GMA12S in my Tahoe. Its appearance was similar to my previous Q80 Pro, so the difference was more about the hardware and interface than a completely different dashboard look.

My installation is one vehicle example. Before ordering, confirm the exact model year, factory audio system, connectors, and any adapters or retained factory features your truck needs.

What was in the box?

The review unit came with the head unit, manual, and wiring. My original review described it as a GMT900-oriented unit, but check the seller’s specific fitment list instead of assuming that every truck in that platform uses the same setup.

Compared with my Q80 Pro

I already had an Eonon Q80 Pro in the Tahoe. The GMA12S looked similar at first glance, while the review unit’s hardware was listed as Android 12 with a Snapdragon 665, eight-core CPU, and Adreno 610 graphics. Those details describe the original GMA12S review unit, not every current Eonon listing.

How the installation went in my Tahoe

This is an overview of the swap I filmed. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and the exact unit and harness you purchase.

  1. Remove the surrounding trim. I used a panel trim tool to release the trim around the stereo.Removing the Tahoe stereo surround with a trim tool
  2. Remove the mounting bolts. The bolts in my Tahoe were 7mm.Accessing the Tahoe stereo mounting bolts
  3. Disconnect the existing unit. I unplugged the connectors and antenna before removing it.Connectors behind the Tahoe stereo
  4. Connect the replacement harness and accessories. My setup included GPS, microphone, USB, and backup-camera connections. The earlier Q80 Pro installation guide has more detail on my accessory installation.
  5. Test before putting the trim back. I checked power and device connection before finishing the installation.

Features covered in my review

  • A clear screen and responsive Bluetooth connection in my testing.
  • Android apps and access to the Play Store.
  • GPS navigation and microphone, USB, and backup-camera connections in my installation.
  • Customizable lighting.
  • 4G/SIM and OBD2 compatibility discussed in the original review. Check the exact unit’s requirements and compatible accessories before relying on those features.
