I am a little late here. It’s already 2022.
Should you buy The latest and.. Some say the greatest… the 2022 BMW M4?
Lets break down the G80 and find out.
Specs
The m4 has the 3.l I6 motor thrown in the front with a twin turbo propelling this car. With 473 horsepower and 406 pound feet of torque paired with a manual transmission, its most car enthusiast dreams. The M4 also comes in a competition model that ups the power to 503 hp with 479 pound feet of torque, but that’s only paired with the ZF-8 speed automatic. The Competition is also optioned with an all wheel drive system giving it an 3.4 second 0-60, allowing the driver to select between three drive modes. This makes the G82, or the 2022 M4 coupe and the G83, the M4 convertible more powerful than the F82/83, or the previous generation by nearly 50hp and gives it .4 second faster 0-60 in the competition version.
The m4 gets around 16-23 mpg, which is worse compared to the previous generation at 18-25 MPG. I would expect a bit worse gas mileage in the convertible by at least 1 mpg.
Motor Talk
Just like the BMW M3 the M4 received the S58B30T0 motor in 2021, which is the successor of the s55 motor. The use of an I6 has been used in BMW for quite some time, with the twin turbocharged variant being introduced in the F80 M3, which yielded the S55 motor. Contrary to what it may seem, the S58 is a derivative of the B58 motor and not the S55 motor.
The s55 is essentially a high performance version of the N55 motor with twin turbos and a few other differences. With some basic bolt ons the S58 motor can reach near 650 wheel hp and near 1000 with an upgraded turbo, a modified head and port injection.
The S58 is regarded as the superior motor compared to the previous M motor.
Configurations
Starting in 2021, the second gen M4 came out with the much larger and controversial front end. I don’t know about yall, but i dig it. With the slanted headlights, it gives the car a pretty aggressive and bold look. It has all the essential modern necessities like keyless start, auto climate, apple carplay, heated front seats, led headlights, harman kardon sound system and i could go on
M4 competition has 19 in front and 20 in rear wheels, gloss black trim, annnd different seat belts.
Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and front and rear cross traffic alert is standard with the competition model.
With Xdrive, you’ll get three driving modes, 4wd, 4wd sport and 2wd, redesigned front suspension, new steering tuning and upgraded oil cooling
The M4 convertible only comes with the competition tune and the X-drive. Instead of the hard tops we are used to with BMW, it uses a soft top that closes in approximately 18 seconds at up to 30 MPH. The soft top is the option here due to it being much lighter than the metal roof. other than that, everything else is essentially the same as the M4 competition..
Visuals
From the exterior, the M4 is completely stunning and somewhat of a neck breaker in my opinion. The side view gives the m4 a sloping look, similar to the new Mustang, dont hate me for saying that. Or you can, that’s fine.

But, I really enjoy the look. A mean aggressive front fascia, and a bold rear end with thin yet menacing tail lamps.
The interior is more than expected. The seats are supportive and some say comfortable and some say not so much. But, this is geared to be a track car so what can you expect? The rear seats are just there for looks but are usable if you have to use them.
The dash has a 12.3 inch touchscreen with Idrive software, paired to 16 speakers throughout the small cabin. Overall , the interior is an aggressive yet beautiful design and I think BMw did a good job here.
The visuals are both bold and somewhat new, so that can definitely be a selling point or a deterrent.
Prices
The standard coupe starts at 73k us dollars. You might think that’s a lot of money, and it is.
The competition costs 76k
The convertible with the standard Xdrive costs around 88k due to the reconfigured suspension and so on.
Although that’s a big pill to swallow, with enough water you can choke it down.
Final Thoughts
The BMW M4 is a beautiful machine that sticks out amongst the crowd. Should you buy one? Well, if you have money to spare, because the G80 platform is hitting all the marks. But, if this is your life savings and you just rounded up enough money or willing to pay the month to month payments, id say no. Wait a couple years when the price drops to grab yourself one. By then, youll know about all the potential electrical and mechanical issues you should be aware of.
